Neon Beginnings: In the spirit of Neon Goat's vibrant energy, could you share a moment when your teen/tween son brought an unexpected splash of colour into your life or business?
My son Finn brings a splash of colour into my life everyday as a born entertainer he is constantly singing and dancing to lift the vibe of the household even on those tricky days.
Recently I decided to take him on my morning run up through the bush and up the mountain. This is usually the time of the day I find my peace and quiet to run through my businesses and upcoming speeches.
A few weeks ago he joined me and talked the whole way, we covered everything and as much as it was very distracting - a reminder of how special that one on one time is. On day 2, he managed to overtake me and literally run up the hill saying “Come on Mum, I'm beating you!”. At that moment I thought, gosh what have I done? He definitely pushed me and motivated me to step it up and not let him beat me up the hill.
Admirable Traits: Teenagers (tweens) often teach us more about life than we realise. What's one thing you admire most about your teen son, or what have you learned from him that's been surprisingly profound?
Finn is that kid who walks down the street and gives compliments to everyone. Especially women! He comments on their hair, their clothes, their puppies and brings so much joy to peoples lives by recognising and making comments that light people up. This is a trait that I truly admire in him and can see the effect of how a little kindness can really lift someone's day.
Shared Passions: What's an activity or hobby you love doing together with your teen son that brings out the 'cool' in both of you, Neon Goat style?
Dancing to Music! It happens everyday in our house and we all love sharing all the old school songs that make us all smile and bring such joy to our home. Hip Hop is always a classic at breakfast time getting ready for the day ahead.
Time-Travel Tips: If you could step into a time machine and visit your teenage self, what cheeky piece of advice would you give yourself about navigating the future, especially knowing what you do now about business and life?
Do not stress the small things, they come and go and are here to teach you a greater path. Without the struggles we simply cannot learn, grow and evolve.
The 'Goat' Legacy: If your teen son were to take over Neon Goat for a day, what innovative or outrageous product do you think he would create, and why?
Funny you ask, Finn has already mentioned he thinks Neon Goat should sell cool aftershaves and face creams. That would be so lit he says.
Navigating the Teen Terrain: Teens are known for their mood swings and monosyllabic responses. What's your secret to getting your teen son to open up and engage in meaningful conversations, especially about life and your business?
From what I have experienced I think it's important to let them unwind and have time alone to reflect on the behaviour that has happened. Afterwards we normally go for a walk in nature and I let him speak. As parents I feel we often do a lot of talking or give them too much advice to just fix it. I have found the power of listening is so much more effective and builds a trust that they can talk to you without being talked over when things arise as they go through the teenage years.
The Ultimate Collaboration: Imagine you're launching a special Neon Goat product inspired by your journey as a parent to a teen son. What would it be, and what story would it tell?
I am with Finn on the idea of cool natural fragrances. When they spray and wear it - it provides a feeling that elevates them and makes them feel unstoppable and the bonus, not stinky!
