From the Sidelines to ON-Court:

How we BOTH had a SHVITZ playing Pickleball

27 SEPTEMBER 2024, WRITTEN BY JACKIE BARON

For nearly 20 years, I’ve played the role of “chauffeur” or more commonly coined “Uber driver”. Schlepping my kids to countless sporting activities—tennis, soccer, basketball, the karate dojo—you name it, I’ve been behind the wheel. But last week, something magical happened. I didn’t just take my son to Pickleball… I actually played with him. And let me tell you, it was one of the most hilarious, joyful, and, frankly, exhausting experiences I’ve had in a while! Keeping up with my teen on the court was no easy feat, but it reminded me of something I’d lost sight of: the pure joy of sharing in experiences with our teenage kids, not just facilitating them.

And so here are 5 reasons why getting shvitzy and playing sports with your teens is so important:

1. Shared Laughter Strengthens Bonds
There's nothing like a good laugh to bridge the gap between generations (now I’m sounding old!). Whether you’re missing the ball or having a rare winning moment, the laughter that comes from these shared experiences helps build lasting memories and a closer bond with your teen.

2. Getting Shvitzy Together Is Good for Everyone
As parents, we’re always encouraging our kids to stay active, but how often do we take our own advice? Playing together helps you both get moving and stay healthy, all while having fun!

  • AVOID THAT MOMENT OF 'CRINGE'

2. Mutual Respect & Understanding
It’s easy to forget how challenging their sports can be when you’re just watching from the sidelines. Playing alongside your teen allows you to appreciate their skill and effort, fostering mutual respect and understanding. In our case study of Pickleball - I actually believe my son may have forgotten how his mother actually was a pretty solid tennis player for many years and hence - we got competitive!

4. Creating Lifelong Memories
These are the moments your kids will remember: not the drives to practice, but the times you were right there on the court with them. You’re creating stories that will be retold at family dinners for years to come…well maybe not years but we both did tell our respective friends how much fun we did have on court!

5. Role Reversal—Let Them Teach You!
There’s something special about letting your teen be the expert. Whether it's teaching you the rules of Pickleball or showing off their skills, giving them the chance to teach you something boosts their confidence and reinforces their knowledge.

So, next time you’re driving your kids to their practice, ask yourself: Why not get involved yourself? The laughter, the joy, and yes, the challenge of keeping up are worth every moment. Plus, you might just discover a new hobby along the way! And for the ride home - not only did HE need a good Shvitz Spritz before getting back in the car…but I did too!
